Managing and collaborating in an intercultural context: the essentials
Intercultural management is a complex challenge for teams made up of several nationalities, cultures and/or backgrounds. And it’s often these teams that manage important projects within the company.
What’s the most effective way to detect intercultural problems and learn to manage them? How can this lead to more fruitful collaboration and increased team performance?
Testimonials from employees who took part in an intercultural skills workshop
Chloé
Manager of an infrastructure project in Egypt
“On our project, between the clients, the entrepreneurs and my team, there were at least 15 nationalities. Many of them were Egyptian, Lebanese and French. We didn’t understand each other anymore, and this was compromising the success of the project. The coaches helped us to better understand that we each came with our own obvious ideas that could offend the others. In two days, we laid the foundations for a more serene collaboration within the team and with the client.”
Romain, France
Within three years, our company was bought by Americans, then we merged with a German team. The intercultural training allowed us to define our differences and set common rules.
Valérie, Belgium
The seminar we organized with Expat Communication for the entire HR function worldwide was a decisive step in getting to know each other better, creating links and working together better.
Jacob, France
Relations with our Indian partner were becoming dangerously tense. With the coaches, we mainly worked to find common points and synergies. Collaboration is still complicated, but we are better at spotting problems and we have a method for clearing them.

Challenges expats face for the return home
Key statistic: 70%
According to 70% of expatriates, their return from expatriation was either “difficult” or “very difficult.”
Learn more in our Barometer report on the return home.
Every year, the Expat Communication barometer reveals that the return is the most challenging period of expatriation.
Expats are faced with lonliness and/or feeling misunderstood; they find it hard to explain or give value to their time abroad, and may even experience a drop in their quality of living. The challenges when returning home are unanimously recognized and cited.
However, this is the step for which companies often provide the least amount of support.
As an expat states very candidly,
“When you’re preparing for your arrival abroad, someone carries your suitcase for you; when coming home they let the door slam in your face.”
Today, we have the resources to ease this step and prevent the challenges a badly handled return from expatriation causes for the company and the employee.
