Children and teens returning from expatriation

Children and teenagers returning from expatriation : the essentials

For expat children and teenagers the return home may not have been a conscious decision on their part and they may be following the family half-heartedly. Having not always lived or grown up in their parents’ country of origin, they may feel uprooted yet again when faced with a country/school system/culture that they do not necessarily consider their own.

How can everyone find their place in this plan to return home, express their emotions and needs in relation to the situation, and adapt to “their” country?

Ado au retour d'une expatriation

Charlotte, 15

Back from Finland where she spent 5 years with her family.

“I went back to my school and my friends, but I felt really out of place. I understand now that this is normal. It made me feel better and I have ideas on how to better adapt.”

5/5

Noam, 13, Japan

"I only knew about France through taking holidays there and what my parents told me. I realize that I have a lot to learn about my country."

5/5

Garance, Léa, and Martin - 16, 14, and 11

"We had never been to school in France. Since the beginning of the school year, we found the teachers and students not at all friendly. The coach explained a lot of things to us which made us understand them better."

The objectives of the program "A Successful Return Home" for children and teens

1. Understand what a return represents emotionally and materially and take the time in a safe space to ask questions, express concerns and motivations

2. Express feelings and initiate dialogue, especially with other children or teens who are experiencing the same situation

3. Join our family expatriation community, which helps to identify and adopt the attitudes that will facilitate the process of integration

Mode that adapts to the needs of expatriate children returning to their country of origin

This personalized program is for children and teens from 7 to 18 years old, within 4 months of their return home from expatriation.

It takes place in the form of a 2-hour workshop in our offices in English or French (for other languages, please contact us).

The work is done either individually or with the siblings, referring as much as possible to the expectations and needs of each person present and his or her personal concerns.
